  • Canelo vs GGG 2: BT Sport’s Big Fight Preview

Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin is regarded as one of the most fearsome fighters in world boxing, racking up an unbeaten record boasting 34 knockouts in 39 professional bouts.

But the Kazakh destroyer was denied a 39th consecutive victory after being held to a controversial draw by Mexican rival Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in September last year.

The middleweight monster is out for revenge when the pair go toe-to-toe once again on Saturday night in a mouth-watering rematch on BT Sport Box Office.

Golovkin appeared to have done enough to edge Canelo out during a thrilling 12-round contest at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas last September, only to be denied by the judges’ scorecards in a now-infamous decision.

Scores of 114-114 and 115-113 in Golovkin’s favour appeared to fairly reflect the narrow margin between the two men – but ringside judge Adelaide Byrd’s bizarre scorecard, ruling in favour of Canelo by 118-110, left many observers baffled.

It meant the bout would be ruled as a split-draw, with neither fighter considered to have done enough to secure a unanimous verdict.

The result was met with indignation by boxing fans and pundits alike.

Judge Byrd was subsequently withdrawn from ringside duties for a short time by the Nevada State Athletic Commission before being asked to explain her scoring of the fight in a later inquest.

A rematch between Canelo and Golovkin was subsequently agreed that would have seen the two foes face off on May 5th in a fight perfectly poised to light up boxing’s fabled Cinco de Mayo weekend.

But in March, Canelo sent shockwaves through the sporting world by confirming he had tested positive for clenbuterol – a banned substance believed to help to strip fat and build lean muscle – in two separate tests administered in February.

The 28-year-old vehemently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining he had ingested the drug accidentally as a result of eating contaminated beef from his native Mexico.

Regardless, he was suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission before being handed a six-month ban, backdated from February, forcing him to pull out of the agreed rematch with Golovkin.

But the consequences of Canelo’s failed drugs test were enormous for Golovkin, too.

Not wanting to risk a period of inactivity, he remained determined to fight on May 5th, taking on former world title challenger Vanes Martirosyan in a hastily-arranged clash at the StubHub Center in Los Angeles.

The brave Armenian lasted all of four minutes and 53 seconds before being clobbered into submission as Golovkin made a statement to his rivals in the division with yet another imposing knockout.

However, Golovkin’s joy was short-lived as he would be later stripped of his IBF middleweight world title after the governing body rejected his application to be exempt from facing his mandatory challenger, Sergiy Derevyanchenko, once the Canelo rematch had fallen through.

With one less world title on the line, talks between Golovkin’s promoter, Tom Loeffler, and Canelo’s handler, Oscar De La Hoya, became increasingly ill-tempered in the months that followed – and the fighters followed suit.

Golovkin ditched his placid persona, tearing into Canelo on a number of occasions in the press before demanding revised financial terms to fight the two-weight world champion once again.

Eventually, to the delight of fight fans around the world, the two parties came together for a third time on a deal that will see the duo go to war for the WBA and WBC middleweight world titles, almost a year to the day since their first meeting.

At 36 years old, Golovkin remains a ferocious operator who prides himself on a delivering a ruthless style of front-foot boxing that has seen him become one of the sport’s most exciting names.

The former Olympic gold medallist is a brutal body puncher, perfecting the technique traditionally associated with Mexican boxing to finish some of the 160lb division’s toughest men.

Armed with an iron chin, he will be hoping to add Canelo’s name to the list of fighters he has felled inside the distance by inflicting the first knockout defeat of his rival’s career.

But the youthful Mexican could look to push the pace against his aging rival who, despite having looked as fresh as ever during recent contests, will surely one day show signs of slowing up.

Spurred on by a year-long layoff and a rivalry that has turned increasingly sour, Canelo promised to play the aggressor when the first bell rings, telling BT Sport: “This is now my second fight at 160lbs and I’m more experienced and that much more confident that I’ll be able to knock him out.”

Golovkin, meanwhile, labelled Canelo a “liar” over the contaminated meat claim when BT Sport caught up with him last month.

After 12 months spent marinating the rematch in bad blood and broken promises, one thing is for sure: fight fans are in for a spectacular show.

Canelo vs GGG 2 is the first of three incredible world title PPV fights set to air on BT Sport Box Office in 2018, with Deontay Wilder vs Tyson Fury and Josh Warrington vs Carl Frampton to come before Christmas.
